Offseason Fishing Report 12-26-17

NEW YORK

Point Lookout

A few cod were pitched aboard every day on the party boat Captain Al, Capt. Tom Weiss said. They weighed 5 to 15 pounds, and one last week weighed 23 pounds. They seemed to be moving deeper in past days, when fishing for them was best in 50- to 75-foot depths. They usually move deeper when the ocean cools, and the water temperature did drop to 43 to 44 degrees inshore and 46 a couple of miles farther out. A few of the cod were jigged, and most were clammed. A few mackerel were landed aboard. No herring were hooked, but the cod spit up herring. The boat is this website’s only that fished for cod daily each winter. The angling usually peaks in January, so jump aboard soon. The trips are running 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, except no trip will fish on New Year’s. See More Info. Call: 516-623-2248.

DELAWARE/MARYLAND

Striped bass were finally boated on the ocean from off Fenwick Island, in southern Delaware, to Ocean City Inlet, Md., online reports said. The catches began last week, and seemed better in the southern part of that stretch. Still, the fish were found throughout. Reports about the fishing from farther north in Delaware sounded slow, at least through Thursday. Reports became scarce during Christmas weekend. Before the weekend, most stripers docked at Delaware were from trips that fished off New Jersey. The stripers boated off southern Delaware and off Maryland included big, up to the 40 pounds.  A few stripers, not many, were reported beached from Delaware’s surf. Mostly spiny dogfish seemed abundant there. Blackfishing was good off Delaware on the ocean.

VIRGINIA

NORTH CAROLINA

Atlantic Beach

Captain Stacy Fishing Center was reporting no bluefin tuna seen in the local ocean yet. The marina began to report a few of the fish caught, like this 351-pounder, in early January this past year. Currently, anglers from the docks waited for the fish. Trips on the ocean lately rounded up groupers and sea bass.

FLORIDA

Florida Keys

Weather was in the 80 degrees around the weekend in the Keys but was cold, in the 50 degrees, 1 ½ weeks ago, reports from marinas said. Cold can be good for some local fishing, though, including for sailfish. The cold triggered some sails to migrate to the area, and some trips scored two to five bites, landing some, missing others. That was on the ocean side, just offshore of the reef. Fish hooked in that area also included wahoos, king mackerel, cero mackerel, groupers, snappers and more. Grouper season closes beginning January 1. Farther from shore, swordfish were pumped in. In the back country, plenty of tarpon showed up in past days. Catches there also included snook, a few redfish and black drum, and more.
